What I love most about this gym is that there are real, every day people here working hard to achieve their goals. Some are looking to lose weight, some want to be stronger, some are looking to be held accountable and have fun at the same time. This is that gym. This is also Mike’s passion and, honestly, the reason I chose to join.

Raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas, my fitness journey began when my father put me in Taekwondo from the ages of 6 to 12 years old. This is the beginning of when I developed a true sense of self- discipline and an understanding of the importance of form and technique in the way one moves, things I carry with me to this day. My weight training journey started when I joined my school’s football team from seventh grade to my senior year. I was definitely not the best player on the field, but the weight room is where I shined. My junior and senior years I joined our high school’s first weight lifting team.

After high school, I spent some years at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, wandering with an undeclared major, less of the fact that there was nothing I wanted to do and more of the fact that I could see myself doing everything. It wasn’t until I took a Personal Wellness class, and learned about the 7 Dimensions of Wellness, that I was inspired and declared for a major in Exercise Science. After 2 years at UALR, I transferred to the University of Central Arkansas, which had an overall better curriculum for the field. Joining UCA was one of the best decisions I’ve made, surrounded by a building of people who shared the same passion for health and fitness as me. After 3 years at UCA, I received my Bachelors in Exercise Science!

After graduation, I left Arkansas to support my sister, who moved to the Roscoe area for work. After a few years, I found myself in a more sedentary lifestyle, and just found myself unhappy not being around like minded people. So last year I declared I would make a change for the better and focus on my nutrition, health, and surround myself with those who share a passion for fitness. This led me to finding and joining Iron Army Performance Center. Iron Army has invited me to join their coaching staff, giving me an opportunity to use my degree and to help improve the lives of those in our community.

Erika Esselman

I’m Coach Erica! My love for Fitness started when I was 16 years old! I hadn’t had a good example growing up of what being fit & healthy looked like. Someone invited me to take a Step Aerobics Class at The Fitness Zone in South Beloit & I was hooked on the feeling it gave me mentally & physically & made exercise a part of my life after that!

I got certified in Group Fitness when I was 18 years old and taught Step Aerobics & HIIT classes at several gyms in the area over the years including Aqua Aerobics at Northpointe. I went through a time in life where I lost who I was for about 6 years… I didn’t take care of myself & exercise was replaced with alcohol as a coping mechanism. 8 years ago I did the work to get sober & I found that running helped my mind so much as I was fighting the battle! I started coaching classes at Anytime Fitness again that year, lost the weight I had put on, & ran my first ever Half Marathon!

I’ve run a Half every year since then! A year & a half ago I started Life Coaching to help women lose weight & become the happiest versions of themselves! I love coaching fitness classes & helping people see how much they are capable of when they don’t give up! Watching someone gain strength & confidence & be able to do things in life that they once weren’t able to do is the best feeling! I try to add happiness & positivity to everyone’s day & look forward to working with all of you!
